i got my first flat tire ever yesterday. and during my first week living in salatiga WITHOUT yohanes, who usually takes care of stuff like that for me. my first backup, ariel, moved to another island on wednesday. and my third backup, the other yohanes, is in jakarta for the weekend. AARRGH! so i asked one of the guards where he suggested i take it - because even though i noticed it was steering funny a little earlier in the day, it didn't actually go flat until i was at home. it became VERY obvious it was flat when i tried to go to the atm. anyways, the jaga gave me directions (there are about a million tire patching places along the road) to a place he knows, and i went there. thirty minutes and fifty cents later, my tube was patched and (almost) good as new. holding up strong so far. i was kind of wishing i had a camera because the whole process is kind of interesting to watch.
the second thing that happened yesterday is that i was walking to fellowship right around 6 o'clock, which is when it gets dark here. it was still kinda dusky out at that point, and as i was walking, i was looking down, smsing on my brightly lit phone. i noticed something moving on the pavement behind my phone, but it was hard to see what due to my phone screen being bright and it being fairly dark outside. but i stopped walking, closed my cell phone, and glanced down to see what it could be. whatever it was was almost the same color as the pavement i was walking on... it took me a few seconds to realize that my toes were just a few inches away from a SNAKE slithering across the road! aaahhhh! luckily, by the time i realized what it was, he was already hurrying on, trying his best to get away from me fast. whew... i'm glad we don't have attack snakes here. they are FAR more afraid of me than i am of them.
