so far i've heard of 18 dead. everyone is trying to find mbah maridjan. he's an ancient old guy who lives on the mountain and is the "gatekeeper" for merapi. his whole job is to watch the volcano. the spirits tell him when it's going to explode and people look to him for direction on when to evacuate. and sadly, the people are STILL waiting for him to tell them it's dangerous... even though it erupted three times yesterday. some women and children have evacuated to bunkers about 7 km away, but a lot of people are still there because they're afraid to leave their homes, farms, and livestock. and, of course, because mbah maridjan hasn't given the word yet. but last i heard, nobody really knows where he is... possibly dead.

i've also heard that the 3 eruptions yesterday released some of the pressure from within, but if the rest doesn't release slowly, we could be looking at a bigger eruption than anything we've seen for years. keep praying.
