so here’s a brief list of things that i anticipate will shock me when i come home this summer. if i anticipate them enough, then will i not be shocked? here’s the first 20 things that come to mind. i’m sure there are many, many more.
1. the toilets are gonna look funny. even the “western” toilets here are shaped differently. and you push a button to flush! and there will be bathtubs in america. and an abundance of toilet paper.
2. table manners. completely different. i mean, what is rude in one culture is polite in the other. and vice versa. sorry mom, you’re gonna think i’m a barbarian for the first couple weeks.
4. driving on the left side of the vehicle on the right side of the road. that’s gonna be a hard one. but highway driving will be GREAT. no traffic jams, cruising speeds, no helmet hair.
5. shopping will be way less of a challenge, thanks to stores like wal-mart and target.
6. non deep fried foods. and no rice. not sure if i’ll survive. because here, even if i’m throwing up sick, i still eat rice.
7. you can’t just walk up to total strangers and start a conversation in america. and i won’t be the center of attention. because in dekalb county, if you’re not mexican, you’re white.
8. in america, you don’t have to turn keys clockwise 720 degrees to lock the door. and in america, you actually have to lock the door.
9. no crushed chiles to eat with absolutely everything. food there is gonna be so bland.
10. if boyfriend gets to come to america with me, i can actually hold his hand in public and not labeled a errrmmm... loose woman.
11. things will be in english! i’ll have to reprogram my brain NOT to translate everything i hear/read. and i might actually have to use good grammar when i speak.
12. everything will be WAAAAY more expensive. i’m gonna think the dollar menu at mcdonalds is outrageous. not that i’m planning to eat at mcdonalds. i can do that here.
13. the silence is gonna be overwhelming.
14. sunset after 6 pm? weird.
15. in america, I CAN DRINK WATER STRAIGHT FROM THE SINK!!!
16. i shouldn’t touch my hand to my chest after shaking someone’s hand in america. also, i won’t have to shake the hand of everyone in the room when i come or go. that’ll be nice.
17. i can look people in the eye and stand with my hands on my hips in america and people won’t think i’m lookin to start a fight.
18. POOOOOOOORK!
19. i can say what i think and expect others to do the same. none of this beating around the bush and avoiding conflict.
20. everybody is gonna think my boyfriend is mexican.
