I just sent a text message to my boyfriend (en route to Jakarta for the next week) telling him I'd just killed a snake in the dark near my house. He wrote back, asking what kind of snake it was. This was my reply:
Coklat n cilik. Mgkn 15 cm. It might be cacing but it moves like snake so i just kill it just in case.
Coklat is Indonesian for brown.
N means and (obviously).
And cilik is Javanese for small.
Mgkn is short for mungkin which is Indo for maybe.
Cacing is Indonesian for worm.
And you can probably read the rest.
People sometimes ask me curiously how many languages I speak. I usually answer "none". They laugh at me. But I'm pretty sure it's the truth. I am no longer fluent in any language.
