this morning i was pretty dang sick. as sick as i’ve been in the past 4 days. lots and lots of lower back pain. it woke me up at 5, so i rolled around in bed for awhile, took a long, hot shower, then went to school to write up some sub plans since i knew there was no way i’d make it through the day. i finished that before school started and came home and crawled back into bed.
at 1, my friend sylva came to drive me to prodia, a medical lab in town. i wanted to get my blood and urine tested to see if they could narrow down what was wrong with me so that i could start treating it. now on day 4, it was becoming obvious that this wasn’t something that would just pass.
sylva helped me figure out what tests i needed... the list of about 100 different tests available really had me confused! all i really needed checked were my blood levels, urine, and liver. so i paid for my tests ($15) and the nurse took me back to the “lab”. they had me sit in an office chair, and as she tied a rope around my upper arm to prep me for drawing blood, we had the following conversation (translated into english for your convenience, dear reader):
nurse: oh, i forgot to ask earlier, are you on your period?
me: uhm... why?
nurse: if you are, we can't do a urine test.
me: well, i am. but it's almost over.
nurse: well, you might have to wait for the urine test.
me: i need to know what's wrong today. i have a job... i need medicine.
nurse: well, we can't do it if you're menstruating.
me: so... why?
nurse: you'll get a false reading, because there will be blood in your urine.
me: i'm pretty sure those are 2 different systems...
nurse: but blood could come out into your urine.
me: oh. um.... i'm american. i wear tampons, not pads.
nurse: what's a tampon?
me: oh dear... well, it goes inside me so that no blood can come out.
nurse: but you have to take it out to pee, so the blood will come out.
me: uh... no, i don't.
nurse: then how do you pee?
me: the tampon stays in.
nurse: you can't pee like that.
me: why not?
nurse: because there's only one hole!
me: are you about to take my blood?!? are you even a nurse?
nurse: yes. why?
me: *in english* oh, dear God, i hope you've had medical training. but i have some serious doubts.
nurse: see this needle? clean, right?
me: uh... i guess so.
nurse: ok. *inserts needle into my arm* so when do you want your urine test?
me: today.
nurse: but we can't.
me: ok. listen. there are TWO HOLES. one for blood and one for pee.
nurse: ya, there's two holes. one for poop, one for pee.
me: well, ok then, there's THREE holes.
nurse: no. let me go ask my boss.
*she finishes drawing my blood, goes to talk to her boss, and returns*
nurse: my boss says you can do your urine test. *hands me a cup* the bathroom is through that door.
me: ok, thanks.
i go through the door and find myself.... in a garage. with a random man with no shoes and his pants unzipped washing his hands in a ghetto looking sink. i asked him where the bathroom was, and he motioned towards the back of the room to a door hanging half off its hinges. i headed that way, and sure enough - a bathroom. with a bare lightbulb hanging from the ceiling and a toilet with no seat in the corner and about 2 inches of water on the floor. so i manage to fill the cup without getting anything on me or touching the toilet. then i went back into the lab area.
nurse: all finished?
me: yup. here's my pee.
nurse: your results will be ready at 6 and we close at 8.
me: ok, i'll come back later then.
nurse: ummm... when you come back, can you bring one of those.... things?
me: things?
nurse: ya, like what we talked about earlier?
me: oh, tampon?
nurse: yeah. i want to see. i've never seen that.
me: sure.
nurse: and can you explain it to me?
me: um... yeah. i can do that.
so i came home and rested almost all day. sylva stayed with me, because indonesian culture mandates that you guard the sick. she got me some food and watched movies with me and talked with me and gave me a dang good back massage. she's pretty much awesome.
i got my test results a couple hours ago. all the levels in my blood work were normal (which is aMAZing given that i live in a country that is not known for its balanced diet or its focus on healthy eating/living), but it showed that i have bacteria in my urine, so i'm pretty sure i've got a kidney infection. that would explain why pain shoots through my body, stemming from my lower back, every time i move.
i've actually been feeling pretty good for the last couple hours. i went and watched a soccer game near my house for about 30 minutes and it didn't hurt as much to walk or sit. i've been sitting up for the last hour or so, eating dinner, writing this, and watching season 2 of house. that's good news, because for the past 3 days, i couldn't even do that without major pain. i haven't taken any meds yet, but i'm going to start on antibiotics tomorrow. and hopefully this feeling of semi-health will last so that i can actually teach tomorrow! my students have done an AWESOME job of stepping in, grading their own homework, learning independently, and teaching each other, but two days is too long to be away from them. i need to get back in the saddle!
oh, and when i went back to get the results, i stuck a tampon in my pocket, but as luck would have it, that nurse was nowhere to be seen... i guess she'll just have to wonder about this mystery product that you can stick inside you to catch the blood but not the pee.
